MAGIC KINGDOM ATTRACTION REOPENS JULY 4TH

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A remarkably lifelike Audio-Animatronics figure of President Barack Obama enters the spotlight in a revised and refreshed Hall of Presidents show that reopens July 4 in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.

The recently installed figure of the country’s 44th chief executive – which comes to life with recognizable mannerisms and makes comments that were recorded recently at the White House – is only part of an eight-month makeover so significant that the iconic attraction in the park’s Liberty Square has been retitled The Hall of Presidents: A Celebration of Liberty’s Leaders. Other updates to the “re-Imagineered” attraction which has been entertaining Magic Kingdom guests since 1971:

  • A re-programmed Abraham Lincoln delivers arguably the greatest speech in the history of the presidency – the Gettysburg Address.

  • For the first time in the attraction’s history, George Washington stands and delivers a stirring speech.

  • Developed with the assistance of Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the show now tells a moving story of the bond between the presidents and “We, the People,” focusing on the chief executives who have guided America through trying, turbulent times.

“Our goal with every major Disney attraction is to completely immerse our guests in a compelling story,” said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “The stories associated with the American presidency are some of the most engaging and relevant our guests will hear while they are with us. And, like all great stories, these stories inspire, motivate and teach us to appreciate the challenges and personal triumph that comes with overcoming adversity.”

True to Walt Disney’s vision, The Hall of Presidents features the appearance on stage of every United States president – life-sized, three-dimensional and fully animated. Seven presidents have been added to the “Hall” since the attraction opened during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

The figure of President Barack Obama is not only the seventh addition but also the most dynamic figure Disney has ever created. Disney Imagineers, who’ve been refining Audio-Animatronics technology since 1963, have discovered new ways to integrate an array of subtle movements and facial expressions into the figures. Imagineers also worked closely with White House staff to create realistic clothing and accessories worn by the Obama figure in the show, right down to a lapel pin and watch.

Kathy Rogers, senior show producer for Walt Disney Imagineering, says the show pays particular tribute to the strength of the bond between the people and the presidents “that led us through the most troubling times in our nation’s history.

“We still present that ‘mighty cavalcade of history’ that Walt Disney originally envisioned,” Rogers says, referring to “headline moments” of America’s past that are depicted in the film, “but it is viewed through the lens of the presidency.”

The 25-minute show begins with the story of George Washington and the struggle to build a new nation. It continues through today, highlighting presidents who have reached out to the people during times of strife. Disney senior show writer and director Pam Fisher, who worked closely with Kearns Goodwin to develop the story, describes the revised Hall of Presidents as “a very human story – one that we hope strikes a chord with all guests.”

A soaring new musical score written by Emmy-winning composer Joel McNeely adds another emotional dimension to the experience.

The show’s impact is bolstered by the stirring performances of actor David Morse, who voices Washington, and the late veteran actor Royal Dano, who voices Lincoln. Morse played Washington in the award-winning HBO miniseries, “John Adams.” Dano was selected by Walt Disney himself to voice the first animated Lincoln figure, which debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and later became part of the Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln attraction at Disneyland in California. Obama’s speech, recorded in the White House Map Room, includes the presidential oath of office and his thoughts about “the American dream.”

In the tradition of earlier versions of the show, the rewritten story begins with a large-format movie, but this time it is projected in crystal-clear, high-definition video. Imagineers digitized many of the huge scenic paintings of historic America made for the original movie by Disney legends including Herb Ryman and Sam McKim. In addition, the team combed through the National Archives, Library of Congress, museums and private collections to acquire more than 130 new images ultimately woven into the show.

Imagineers enhanced the soundtrack with digital production and state-of-the-art speakers; they also upgraded the lighting with energy-efficient LED technology.

The new Hall of Presidents experience begins in the pre-show lobby, which has been transformed into an expanded gallery of presidential artifacts. The inaugural exhibit showcases the women behind the presidents. Large display cases exhibit dresses and personal objects worn by several first ladies, including Edith Roosevelt (Teddy’s wife), Elizabeth Monroe and Nancy Reagan. The historical gallery also displays presidential portraits of Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and other chief executives, plus two cases filled with personal artifacts of presidents including Gerald Ford, Franklin Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover and George Washington.

Presentations of the Hall of Presidents show will take place daily and are included with Magic Kingdom admission.

  • High Tech Efficiency and Theme Park Vacations

    by Jessica Bright

ORLANDO, Florida – It is that time of year again. The kids are out of school and you want to create happy memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives. You plan, pack, and travel and then suddenly you arrive to realize half of the human population had the same brilliant idea. As you wait, and wait, and wait, and wait in the many hot theme park lines you think of everything else you could be doing and try to develop a strategy to experience the rides as efficiently as possible. But, as you plot your trek from attraction to attraction you find that guessing the wait times isn’t as easy as you hoped. You pass one very long line in hopes of finding a shorter one and instead find that the initial line was not as long as you thought. Isn’t there a better way?

As a result of spending many hours in the parks and thinking that same thought Brent Pope came up with his own solution. Using iPhone technology he designed and developed a handy new tool that helps you know what the wait times are throughout the Orlando theme parks and plan your day accordingly. Wait Watchers™, his new app for the iPhone, is helping park visitors at Disney and Universal avoid long lines. “It's not about weight loss. It's about waiting less,” said Pope. He just released this tool in time for the summer travel season. It displays wait times for every attraction in the park, making it easier for users to decide where to go next.

The app works like a virtual message board, users can both view and post wait times from a list of all the attractions in a theme park. “It helps people help each other,” Pope said. “The development team and I designed it to be both easy to 'consume' wait times and 'contribute' wait times. Like I say, it's not just an app. It's a community.”

Wait Watchers™ will sell for $.99 at the iTunes App Store. Look for Pope this summer as you enjoy the theme parks. He will be in the Orlando parks as much as possible, entering wait times and darting from attraction to attraction. He is personally committed to launching a community for this endeavor and assuring that the application is accurate and effective. As the popularity of this tool grows Pope says “The more users that are involved, the better the app will be.”

Wait Watchers™ has the potential to help people find the rides with the shortest waits, Pope said he expects it to be popular, especially among families who have already spent large sums of money just to get into a theme park. “Whether this is your first time at the park or you are an experienced passholder, it will help you get more out of money you spent on your visit,” said Pope.

Wait Watchers™ Magic Kingdom® edition (formerly Wait Times Magic Kingdom® edition) has been on sale at the iTunes app store since June 9, with many people already downloading it and contributing wait times for rides. Now versions for each of the other Disney non-water parks and the two Universal parks in Orlando as well as the Disney and Universal Parks in California are available. “I hope people will be as excited about this as I am,” Pope said. “After all, no one plans a vacation just so they can waste time standing in long lines.”

A New Taste of Mexico is Coming to Miami!

Mercadito Midtown to Open Winter 2009

MIAMI, Florida – Tacos, guacamole, ceviches and more…will bring a taste of Mexico to the $2.3 billion neighborhood of Midtown Miami in Winter 2009 with the opening of Mercadito Midtown.

Mercadito, Spanish for “little market,” is the fifth location for the Sandoval brothers, owners and operators of the successful Mercadito, Mercadito Grove and Mercadito Cantina restaurants in New York City and Mercadito Chicago.

To be located in Midtown’s Midblock East building within the heart of the neighborhood’s “Restaurant Row”, Mercadito will blend true native traditions of Mexican cuisine with a modern flair. Creative dishes and authentic delicacies will be offered in an indoor/outdoor setting, with a separate taqueria for takeout and delivery, an added plus for the more than 1,000 Midtown residents. The main dining room and bar area will offer space for 145 seats, while outdoor dining will accommodate seating for 106 people, allowing guests the enjoyment of Midtown’s urban feel and Miami’s spectacular weather.

Infusing tradition into each recipe found on the menu, Chef Patricio Sandoval draws his culinary inspiration from shopping with his mother as a child in the open-air markets of Mexico, always gravitating toward the local merchants with their fresh ingredients and bold flavors.

Bringing an artistic energy to Mexican cuisine, Mercadito’s menu will include thoughtful variations of delicious guacamoles, which includes the traditional version (tomato, cilantro, onion and serrano chile) and the popular mango guacamole with jicama and chipotle. Nearly a half-dozen ceviches will also be offered such as Callo de Hacha (marinated bay scallops with tomatillo pico de gallo and apple-chile guajillo broth) and Camaron (shrimp, mango, tomatillo pico de gallo and poblano-epazote broth).

Mercadito’s infamous selection of tacos include Pastor (ancho-guajillo rubbed pork, grilled pineapple and chile de arbol salsa); Estilo Baja (beer battered mahi mahi, Mexican-style coleslaw and chipotle aioli); and Camaron (shrimp, roasted garlic, chipotle mojo and avocado). Entrées feature Pollo a las Brasas (grilled whole adobo marinated chicken, three corn pico de gallo and chile de arbol salsa) and side dishes such as Arroz Verde al Horno (green rice casserole with manchego and Oaxaca cheese); Elote Mexicano (Mexican-style corn on the cob); and Plátanos Machos (fried plantains).

The unique culinary experience of Mercadito would not be the same without the enjoyment of a wide selection of Mexican spirits. With a beverage program created exclusively by industry veterans and leading beverage experts Tippling Bros., a dizzying array of Mexican tequilas will be featured within Mercadito’s indoor and outdoor tequila lounge offering a scintillating twist on traditional Mexican cocktails. Margarita options includes Mercado (tequila blanco, pineapple, lime and chile piquin); Pepino (tequila blanco, cucumber lime and chile de arbol); and Tres Cítricos (tequila blanco, orange, grapefruit, lime and habanero). An assortment of Mexican beers will also be available.

“We are thrilled to be expanding into an emerging, metropolitan market in Miami,” said Alfredo Sandoval, co-owner along with brothers Felipe and Patricio. “Mercadito embodies the personality and artistic vibe of the urban Midtown Miami neighborhood and we look forward to celebrating the opening later this year.”

The interior design of Mercadito will create an upbeat and stylish ambience like an “artist’s loft.” A contemporary blend of Mexican arts and fresh, vivid colors will grace the walls of the 5,000-square-foot restaurant. The décor will also include pop and graffiti artwork created by well-known artist Erni Vales, best known for his development of the 3-D graffiti style.

The boldly decorated restaurant will create an open, airy feel with its glass retractable door and focal points consisting of hanging, custom lanterns made entirely of rope and a centrally located communal dining table for festive gatherings. Exposed white-washed brick walls and columns wrapped in wire mesh surround the dining room, while rope screens add texture and create privacy between banquettes and tables. Mercadito’s main bar will be wrapped in patterned colored leather with a continuous white quartzite top, and the bar’s backdrop will be framed by large antique mirror panels with a series of custom, metal pyramids serving as a unique light sculpture.

Mercadito will serve lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and dinner seven days a week from 5 p.m. to midnight. A limited menu for late-night dining will also be available Wednesday and Thursday until 1 a.m.; Friday and Saturday until 3 a.m. Mercadito will be located at 3252 NE First Avenue.

    About Mercadito Restaurants

Mercadito Restaurants have grown from their first New York City location in 2004 to becoming a renowned restaurant group specializing in Mexican cuisine and modern taquerias. The popularity of these restaurants can be attributed to the innovative interpretations of traditional Mexican cooking created by Chef Patricio Sandoval. The management team behind Mercadito Restaurants has over 15 years of experience and currently owns and operates three critically-acclaimed restaurants in New York City: Mercadito, Mercadito Grove, and Mercadito Cantina.
